The film won two 2018 Canadian Screen Awards – Donald Brittain Award for Best Social/Political Documentary Program and Best Original Music, Non-Fiction. The Secret Path acknowledges a dark part of Canada’s history – the long-suppressed mistreatment of Indigenous children and families by the residential school system – with the hope of engaging all Canadians in the reconciliation process. The story is told through music by Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie and illustrations are by graphic novelist Jeff Lemire. This powerful animated film tells the story of Chanie Wenjack, a 12-year-old Ojibwa boy who died of exposure in 1966 while running away from Cecilia Jeffrey Indian Residential School near Kenora, Ont. 10, Festival Hall will be screening Secret Path for local schools and for the general public. The two Renfrew County school boards’ indigenous education leads, Tina Nelson and Kellie Hisko, are helping to organize Secret Path Day for local students. He has represented the Algonquins at conferences and seminars at all levels of government and has been a key player in the conservation of the moose population in the area as well as the protection of the Algonquin Park wolves. He has been trained in the area of negotiation skills and effective decision making. All schools (daycares, K-12 and post-secondary), clubs and groups that work with youth throughout Canada are encouraged to join us by signing up. He is aware of all the issues that affect his people. The Legacy Schools program is a free national initiative to engage, empower and connect students and educators to further reconciliation through awareness, education and action (reconciliACTION). Meness is highly involved in First Nation politics both at the local and national level. Jim Meness will be coming to give welcome. Katie Commanda from the Cultural Centre is assisting and will be organizing merchandise, vendors and historical displays. The Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation will be very much involved in the event. The Legacy Space is in a very visible area which will be viewed by the thousands that walk through the doors of the theatre each year. The Gord Downie / Chanie Wenjack Legacy Event is the first step in what they hope will be annual events, that grow in size and participation.
